The National Institute of Justice hosted, on Friday, March 14, 2025, the public lesson dedicated to the individualization of criminal punishments, an event addressed to future judges and prosecutors in the initial training course.

The activity was delivered by the team of the Republic of Moldova at the "Judicial Cooperation" program, organized by the Matra Rule of Law Training Program: Victor Sandu, President of the Association of Judges from the Republic of Moldova, Nicolae Zaharia, judge, Susana Jubea from the National Penitentiary Administration, Olesea Panchiv from the Ministry of Justice, Victoria Bronici, head of the Northern Regional Probation Inspectorate. The Moldovan group was also joined by Prof. Dr. Ioan Durnescu, from the University of Bucharest, who spoke about Romania's experience regarding alternatives to detention.

Candidates for the positions of judge and prosecutor were exposed to the principles of the individualization of criminal punishments, the criteria for applying sanctions and their impact on social reintegration. The discussions concerned both national judicial practice and European models, highlighting the benefits of non-custodial punishments, including unpaid community work and probation, in reducing recidivism and decongesting prisons.
